Luxor rewards a plan built around the two banks of the Nile. Temples in the modern city, royal tombs beyond the river and longer excursions each need a different transport arrangement. This Luxor travel guide helps you choose a realistic programme before booking a car, rather than trying to fit every landmark into one rushed day.
How to divide your time in Luxor
For a first visit, reserve one outing for Karnak and Luxor Temple on the East Bank and another for the West Bank. A longer stay gives you room for smaller archaeological sites, museums or a trip north to Dendera. If you have just one day, choose your priorities and include a proper lunch break. Temple courtyards and desert paths can feel tiring when several visits run together.
East Bank temples and city visits
Karnak is a large complex where a guide can help you understand what you are looking at. Luxor Temple works well as a separate visit closer to the city centre. Give each its own time allocation, even when they share a driver. Museums and the Corniche can fill a quieter part of your stay; check their current opening arrangements before adding them around a flight or cruise departure.
West Bank tombs and temples
The Valley of the Kings, Temple of Hatshepsut and Colossi of Memnon make a familiar introduction. Medinet Habu, Deir el Medina and the Valley of the Queens suit visitors who want a fuller view of ancient Thebes. Each attraction has its own admission arrangements. A temple visit and a tomb visit also involve different levels of walking, so the best combination depends on your interests and mobility.
Choosing private transport
Tell us whether your hotel is on the East or West Bank. If you are joining a Nile cruise, share the ship name and confirmed docking location. A vehicle itinerary uses the road crossing when travelling between banks; a passenger ferry does not move your private car with you. Confirm waiting time, the final drop-off and whether a licensed guide is included.
Travelling onwards
A Luxor to Aswan transfer can include Edfu and Kom Ombo with enough time allowed for visits. Dendera lies north of Luxor, while Edfu lies south, so they belong to different route plans. For a Red Sea connection, confirm your exact resort rather than using Hurghada as a general label. A relaxed transfer day is often a better choice than a tightly timed sightseeing day followed by an important departure.
